CHAPTER SEVEN

JULIANA gaped up at him while the import of his words sank in.

'I take it by your silence that you will do as I say,' he drawled. 'After all, I'm sure you want to continue as Mrs Blake Preston, don't you, Juliana?'

Did she?

'In that case we won't mention the matter of your little indiscretion again,' he finished coldly, and, turning, strode from the room, leaving the door open behind him.

Juliana stared at the empty doorway for a few seconds before throwing the pillow away and dashing after Blake.

His bedroom was empty. Where had he gone? The sound of the shower running sent her hurtling into his bathroom, uncaring of his privacy, uncaring of her own nudity, uncaring of anything but the need to give voice to the fury welling up within her. She banged back the sliding glass door to reveal a naked Blake standing there under a steaming jet of hot water, his face upturned, his eyes shut. He didn't flinch an inch, or open his eyes, or turn her way.

'How dare you?' she spat. 'How dare you? I have not even looked at another man during our marriage, let alone slept with one. For you to imply...no, not imply, accuse me of being unfaithful while you were away, of doing with some other man the sort of things we did last night, why I... I... words fail me!'

She scooped in some much needed air. Her whole body was shaking uncontrollably. But even in her rage some inner instinct warned her to be careful with what she said, what she admitted. 'Has it ever occurred to you I might have become a little bored with our sex-life?'

she ranted on. 'For it had become boring, Blake. Even you must recognise that. Boring and predictable. And maybe I've become dissatisfied with the way you never touch me unless it's in bed. A wife likes her husband to show outward signs of affection occasionally.'

Now Blake opened his eyes to look at her. They were hard and disbelieving. Juliana put her hands on her hips in a gesture of defiance and outrage. 'I have not taken a lover, either at work or any other place. And I will not resign on Monday! If that means you are going to divorce me, then so be it! Nothing, not being your wife or all the money in the world, is worth having to give up my independence and self-respect! To tell the truth, I can't imagine why I agreed to marry you in the first place, Blake Preston. You'd have to be the most selfish, cold-blooded, monstrous man in the entire world!'

The hands that shot out to grab her came so fast that she'd been yanked into the shower before she could say Jack Robinson. Blake slammed her hard against the wet tiles, holding her hands captive on either side of her, jamming one solid thigh between hers.

'Is that so?' he ground out, his sneering mouth only inches from hers.

'Well, in that case you won't be surprised to hear I don't believe a word you've just said.
